Enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and dual U.S./French citizen, Kathryn Machi, MFA Fiction and Screenwriting, helms ViviLu Productions where she creates upbeat, feminist, and culturally diverse stories for international audiences ages 10 to 110.

FIREBIRD was selected for the 2020 Inaugural Indigenous List, sponsored by Sundance, IllumiNative, and The Black List: “A curated list highlighting talented Indigenous storytellers in film and television writing the type of stories that the Indigenous community feels will both entertain audiences and impact hearts and minds around the world.”

Kathryn’s feature screenplays and TV series were developed via Sundance Co//ab; The Black List; IllumiNative, the California Film Institute; Nuit Blanche Productions in Montreal, and Cherokee Nation culture bearers. A dance lover and master holistic arts practitioner/instructor, Kathryn lives with her husband on the foggy western edge of San Francisco.

PROJECTS:

JUNE ROSE: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY, is set in 1969 San Francisco and the Cherokee Nation. Based on true events and inspired by Kathryn's Cherokee heritage, the TV pilot is currently a Quarterfinalist in the 2020 Final Draft Big Break screenwriting competition, and was a Screencraft Fellowship quarterfinalist. JUNE ROSE is a fiscally sponsored project with Filmmakers Collaborative San Francisco whose mission is "to support compelling films and campaigns that engage audiences and create tangible public benefit.

FIREBIRD, an exuberant YA dance drama set in Oklahoma and the South of France, is on the 2020 Inaugural Indigenous List, hosted by Sundance, IllumiNative, and the Black List. The script was a Finalist in The Script Lab's 2020 competition, placing in the top 25 in over 13,000 submissions, and won Best Feature Screenplay at the 2019 Tulsa American Film Festival.

BUZZ, a post-modern feminist dance thriller, is set in contemporary San Francisco and stars Earth's superheroes: Bees! BUZZ was optioned by Mar Vista Entertainment in 2019.

THE DANGERGIRLS, a limited series thriller set in SF's gritty early '80s underground art scene, was developed via Sundance Co//ab and the California Film Institute. The story is based on true events and Kathryn’s unpublished, eponymous, coming-of-age novella.
